I was drinking beer and discussing this with the Wif, as one will. I need to watch how I say what, as she was thinking about my social networking. I don’t social network. I don’t network at all. So when we talk about social networking, I’m talking about the platform, not the activity. Key ideas time.
- User owned content
- User owned visibility
- User owned comments
If I want to post, a thing, I post a thing. If there’s a container for a thing, wicked. If there’s not a container, meh. If I want to leave, my comment guess with me. If I want to destroy content, I destroy. If I as a voyeur don’t like to see a content format, I don’t see it. If I want to see content in a way the poster didn’t intend, make it easy.
Advertising, if any, should be at the posters discretion. Advertising should be clearly advertising. Advertising should be nonintrusive. No auto play audio. No auto play videos. No pop-ups. No ads leaving their box.
If I want to see it, chill. If I want others to see it, chill. If I want others to see it, and I see that they saw it, and they want me to see them seeing it, chill. Only voyeuring when voyeuring is allowed, is allowed. Disconnect external resources. No cross-site tracking.
Comments, obviously inherit visibility, plus the option of comments. Some people can see, some people can see and comment, but only if I can see them seeing it. Others can see the comments if they can see them.
